Maharashtra Din
Why Maharashtra band in 1 May
A "band " in India is a form of protest similar to a general strike. It's a call for the general
public to abstain from work, for shops to remain closed, and for public transport
to halt. Political parties or communities organize bandhs to express their grievances or
to show solidarity for a particular cause. However, the reason Maharashtra observes a
holiday (and not necessarily a band in the sense of a protest-induced shutdown) on May
1st is a significant one:
Maharashtra Day: May 1st is celebrated as Maharashtra Day (Maharashtra Din) every
year. This day commemorates the formation of the state of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960.
Why May 1st?
Before 1960, the region of Maharashtra was part of a larger Bombay State, which
included present-day Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh. People in this state spoke
various languages, including Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi, and Konkani.
Recognizing the linguistic and cultural differences, a movement called Samyukta
Maharashtra Samiti advocated for a separate state for Marathi-speaking people. After a
long struggle, the Bombay Reorganisation Act was passed by the Indian Parliament in
1960. This act divided the bilingual Bombay State into two new states based on language:
• Maharashtra: For the Marathi-speaking population, with Mumbai as its capital.
• Gujarat: For the Gujarati-speaking population.
The Bombay Reorganisation Act came into effect on May 1, 1960. Therefore, May 1st is
celebrated as Maharashtra Day to mark the official formation of the state of
Maharashtra. It's a day to remember the struggle for linguistic identity and to celebrat
e Marathi culture and heritage.
On this day, you'll typically see parades , cultural events, and ceremonies across
Maharashtra. It's also a public holiday, so government offices, schools, and banks usually
remain closed.
So, while May 1st is indeed a significant day in Maharashtra, the closureand observances
are primarily due to the celebration of Maharashtra Day, marking the state's formation
, rather than a "bandh" called for protest purposes. It's a day of pride and
commemoration for the people of Maharashtra.
Interestingly, May 1st is also observed as International Labour Day in many parts of the
world, including India. This is a separate observance that recognizes the contributions of
workers and the history of the labor movement. So, Maharashtra Day coincides with
International Labour Day.
